Silversmith and Goldsmith (KINKOU)
Japanese Silversmith and Goldsmith have developed in a unique way.
The main reasons are geographic conditions and natural resources, but also the absence of soldering techniques obliged Japanese artisans to create a technique using only one element. On the other hand, wrought iron techniques applied to make swords and engrave metals to decorate sword guards (tsuba) have developed very well.
Inlaid Work (ZOGAN)
By not having soldering techniques, Japanese people have developed original techniques to inlay metal with silver. This technique can turn all facets flat, can put together separate pieces to give it a three dimensional look, or can inlay gold or silver in chiseling to make it look like a weaving. In the old times, these techniques were used to decorate sword guards, the sword being considered a symbol of samurai spirit.
