Aroma of Green tea

The aroma of Green tea is a refreshing green and bitter smell.

Green tea was a fashionable keyword for quite some years and many brands have adopted its image into their products. However, from a Japanese point of view the western fragrance of Green tea seems closer to citrus.

More than ten years ago, I remember serving real green tea and macha (powdered green tea) to foreign visitors, but unfortunately it wasn't very popular for its bitter taste and they wanted to add some sugar. (Well, some people in Japan also add sugar in tea so it might be just different people having difference tastes.)

Green tea served in foreign countries most of the time used to be Chinese green tea and did not have the fresh and young green color and smell of the Japanese green tea. (In China there are green tea, white tea, black tea, red tea, and blue tea.)

Nowadays, well at least in the house I have visited in France, Japanese green tea was served. Though in tea bags.

I served them the newest leaves of real Japanese green tea I brought as a gift, but it was still too strong for them and they said they cannot drink it after 3 (or they won't be able to sleep). It is true that green tea contains a lot of caffeine.

Sushi became popular and has established its position in western countries. It also became now much easier to get Japanese food. I am glad to see the Japanese taste gradually settling in the western countries.

Nori (laver) can also be purchased in Asian food shops but the aroma is lost and is lacking taste for Japanese people. The color, shine, aroma was incomparable from the finest quality Nori I brought with to France for snack.

My French friends tried it but none of them liked it. Even my friends who are used to eat Sushi, the aroma of the fresh Nori was still too strong.

Maybe it is similar to the fresh herbs of Province too strong for Japanese people.
